The December quarter was a difficult period for New Zealand fixed interest investors.
Indeed, returns for the Forsyth Barr New Zealand Fixed Interest Fund (formerly the Forsyth Barr Premium Yield Fund prior to 11 December 2020) were negative for the December quarter.
In general, we were relatively well prepared for the move higher in New Zealand fixed interest yields that occurred over the last quarter, but could not protect investors from negative returns for the December month and quarter.
The Forsyth Barr New Zealand Fixed Interest Fund slipped by -0.09% (gross of fees and tax) in the month of December, but outperformed the reference index by 0.15%. Over the quarter, the fund decreased by -0.69%, outperforming the reference index by 0.27%.
We intend to continue to hold the securities currently in the fund and we have also been aggressively accumulating cash, which is around 15% of the fund’s value.
It’s important to note that we are not a long-term holder of cash - we see no logic with the Official Cash Rate at 0.25%. We expect to deploy the cash early in January, on the basis of our view that New Zealand bond yields have the potential to move higher from current levels.
New Zealand’s economy has proven to be far more resilient than we originally expected 12 months ago. In general, consumer activity has returned to levels prior to the emergence of the COVID-19 virus and residential property prices, in aggregate, are at historic highs – boosting property owners’ perception of wealth and further stimulating household consumption.
Given this backdrop, we see the potential for the re-emergence of inflation later in the year and we have an expectation that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will need to gradually reduce the amount of monetary policy assistance from current levels. We expect this theme to become market consensus in the second quarter of 2021.
